Apple's iPad

Categories: ,

(Although old news, I had to do a post on the 1st piece of big news this year in the tech world.)

First of all...that is a complete fail with the naming. iPad? Really Apple? Even after knowing that SNL did a skit on this along time ago?

Ok, now people usually write me off as completely Anti-Apple and a hater. And they're pretty much right. I hate how they run business and how people fall for their...gimmicks. I'm not, however, a hater of the quality of their products.

Now saying all that I must say that I'm kinda on the fence about the iPad. So i'll just note some likes and dislikes.
LIKES:
  • Price - This may be one of Apple's most reasonably priced products they've ever released. $500 for the bare minimum isn't too bad for all that you get (giant iPod + eReader)
  • Battery Life - They say it can get a good 10hrs (probably really 7) off a single charge which is pretty nice for those long flights or car rides
  • Size - 10" can fit just about anywhere except for your pocket

I guess that's really all for that. I could see myself buying this for watching movies on trips and playing games, but that's really all.

DISLIKES:

  • eReader - Now although it is also an eReader, the bright ass screen will cause eye strain after long periods of use. dedicated eReaders use e-Ink that lets you read without this problem.
  • It's from Apple - Now...since this is running on iPhone OS, you'll have to get apps from the their App store, which means you have to play by their rules, which i just hate.
  • Multitasking - None. WTF? So if I'm surfing the web, and have to pull up something else, I have to close the browser, open the other program, close it, then go back and start over where I was at on the web? Come on Apple....really?
  • Presentation - Now this is really nothing against the product itself, but the way Steve Jobs presented this to us. He made it sound like this was something completely ground breaking and it would change how computing was to be done. Such BS. There is really nothing new or special about this product.

They have different models such as 16, 32, 64GB versions with or without 3G from AT&T

There's more I like and don't like about this product. Could I recommend it to someone? It's hard to say. if you think you need a large iPhone/iPod touch then go for it. Movie watching and ebook reading would be great. At the end of the day...I know I dont have a need for one. I rather spend money on a fully functioning laptop.

4 Response to Apple's iPad

now, u know i had to comment on this.

YES, u are a apple hater...but, a lot of PC "innovators/early adopters" are. I think the main reason is because from being a long time Mac-head I've realized that Mac doesnt really cater to these two groups the same way PC-users are accustom too.
Mac (in my opinion) caters to the Early Adopter crowd before the innovator crowd. they drop a product like the iPad that lacks in areas "true innovators" wouldnt expect an innovative product to lack. And, thats because Apple sells to the ppl that want the latest and hottest product 1st and then they come back later with the upgraded product for innovators. So, the Mac marketing curve would go: early adopters-innovators-pragmatist-(and so on)...while the typical marketing curve has innovators before early adopters.
Of course to many this wouldnt seem like a big problem, but to innovators (especially in the tech-arena) these can serve as a very unnerving practice because they have to wait where normally the early adopters would be the ones jealous about not having a cutting edge product.
Which makes ur dislike of Mac's "gimmicks".

So, all-in-all on the iPad i will have to agree that for this to be the cutting edge tablet i'm severely disappointed in not only just the iPad but ALL tablets that have been announced so far this year.
But, specifically addressing the iPad: no multi-tasking, no forward facing camera, and no ports/drives (USB, SD or CD/DVD)...make this a product where I'll wait on the 2nd version.

Geez, nigga. Not a Apple hater. It's probably going to be my next laptop when they update the current line.

Neways...I agree with your last paragraph. It's definitely better to wait till version 2. Sadly, I don't know if any tablet will come with a DVD drive though.

And i'm keeping my eye out on the HP Slate. It looks pretty promising

I actually would prolly hate if one did...but, i'll take it over no drive at all. cos, really whats the point of any product running an OS (outside of phones) that u cant atleast hook a flash drive up to?

Now, if they create an app like Mover for iPhones for iPads and iMacs then a drive would be pointless cos u could just transfer files simply by placing the devices next to each other.

True. but everything has a USB except the iPad which doesn't need one cause its pretty much an iPhone.

And other slates are going to have Apps. Well the HP Slate will so installing won't really need a cd drive.
